How to organize a football tournament with groups and a final phase

Use this guide to set up a football tournament that players and spectators can follow from the first group match to the final.

To organize a football tournament in Clutchee, create a tournament, choose Football, select Groups + Final phase, add the teams, publish the bracket, enter each score as matches finish and share the public link with players and spectators.

Example: 8 teams, 2 groups, then semi-finals

A realistic community cup can start with eight teams split into two groups of four. Each team plays the other teams in its group once. The top two teams from each group qualify for the final phase.

Group A

North FC, Riverside, Atlas, Red Lions

Group B

Union 7, Blue Stars, Village United, Rockets

Final phase

The first team from Group A can meet the second team from Group B, and the first team from Group B can meet the second team from Group A. The winners play the final.

  3. 3Add the teams. If you need rosters, add the players inside each team.

Tie-breakers actually used in group standings

For football scores, the standings are sorted by the rules currently implemented in Clutchee:

  1. Total points
  2. Goal difference
  3. Goals scored
  4. Team name in alphabetical order if the table is still tied

Once the tournament is public, you can send the same link in WhatsApp, Discord or social posts. Spectators see the bracket and scores on the public page; they do not need an account to follow the competition.

Useful answers before tournament day

How many matches are played in the group stage?

With two groups of four and one round robin in each group, every team plays three group matches, for twelve group matches in total.

Can a group match end in a draw?

Yes. With football points scoring, a win gives three standings points and a draw gives one point to each team.

Do spectators need to install Clutchee?

No. Send them the public tournament link and they can read the bracket, standings and recorded scores in their browser.
